Sometimes You Just Have to Shop Without Coupons

We've had a crazy last few weeks.  The kids have gone back to school, I have gone back to work post maternity leave and my husband has also started taking classes full-time.  This combined with some health issues (good news, Praise God!) left me to go to the store tonight to shop for a whole new diet that I have been put on to help the baby.

I went to Walmart this evening armed with exactly one coupon for $.55 and bought $55 worth of stuff that was dairy, soy and nut free!  I literally walked around and looked for anything that had a reasonable amount of protein and was free of the aforementioned allergens and threw it in the cart.

This brings me to my point.  Occasionally, you have to cut yourself some slack and just go to the store and get it done.  This may be painful for some of you die-hard frugals out there, but life happens and that's the way it is.  If you can, enjoy it and try something new.  Good Luck!

P.S.  If anyone has any suggestions on recipes, tips or good protein sources for a dairy, soy and nut free diet, I would love to hear them!  I now have a bit of empathy for you moms/people who deal with allergies on a regular basis, wow!

  1. My suggestion is to make your own food as much as possible & (for a while) lower your expectations on how "gourmet" your food needs to be. I also try to plan simple meals around cheap hypoallergenic ingredients to lessen cost & meal planning time. Potatoes, rice, veggies, eggs & beans are all good options. You didn't mention wheat, so maybe you can still use that?

My other suggestion is Grabill Country Sales in addition to the other health food stores in town. GCS has a great selection on bulk foods, including various kinds of rice, sea salt, rice flour, seeds, etc & i've gotten good deals on good basics for a hypoallergenic diet if you know what you're looking for. good luck!

  2. Thanks, Amanda! I think you are totally right about making your own things. I just didn't realize milk was in so many things! Thanks for the advice.
