Frugal Pancake Syrup

One recent Saturday morning, my husband made pancakes for breakfast.  We didn't realize (until they were already made) that we were out of pancake syrup.  To satisfy our craving for something sweet on top, I went back to a childhood favorite.  My very frugal mother, from whom I have learned most of my frugalness, had us put a small amount of butter and brown sugar on the top of the pancakes, instead of syrup.

This will taste differently in texture, but I like the almost crunchiness that it adds.  It also saves on chemicals that you are putting in your body.  The regular syrup from the store has a bunch of junk in it.  Finally, it is less expensive.  I think most people have brown sugar around the house, so this might make a convenient back-up (or new front runner?) in your house as well.

P.S. Kate uses honey on her pancakes at her house.  You can also try fruit as well.
