Yogurt is a wonderful food. We use yogurt as a substitution for various things in our house. Here are some ideas:
- Homemade hummus. We serve this at snack time and at parties or family gatherings with homemade pita chips. (The recipe and pictures of those will came later this week.) Yogurt is a pivotal ingredient in this recipe which can be found here.
- In place of sour cream for casseroles, topping baked potatoes, in pasta salads, etc. Yogurt is much higher in protein and lower in calories than sour cream.
- In smoothies with milk and frozen berries or bananas. Note: because plain yogurt isn't as sweet, you may have to add some honey or jelly to sweeten slightly, especially while making the adjustment to plain.
- Protein Shakes: My husband will combine protein powder, banana, milk, peanut butter and yogurt for an easy on-the-go breakfast.
- Yogurt can actually be used as a low fat substitute for oil in muffins. It gives baked goods a very moist consistency.
Some other notes:
- Kroger has a store brand organic yogurt (Private Selection) in the 32 oz. tubs that is priced comparably with the National conventional brands. It is found in the regular dairy section.
- If you find clearance yogurt, buy it! Especially for the aforementioned purposes, it freezes really well.
- I also don't get too worked up if it's past it's expiration date a few days. It has all of those great active cultures anyways, they're fighting off all of the bad bacteria. (Right?) :)
- Greek yogurt is extra creamy and there seems to have been lots of coupons for good deals lately.
- The 32 oz. container is definitely the better deal, but you can also try just a little 6 or 8 oz. container to test it in/on some things. Dannon makes plain small containers.
I know of people who successfully make their own yogurt, but from what I know of, it takes expensive starters and machinery. Has anyone made their own frugally? I would be interested what kind of time investment it takes as well. Thanks!
