Frugal Kid Fun: Oobleck

I have some really smart mommy friends.  I feel like I am always picking up cool new tricks that I have never thought of or heard of.  You may have heard of this oobleck, a non-Newtonian liquid that is basically a suspension of cornstarch and water.

That very scientific definition translates into really messy fun for you kids that is incredibly inexpensive.  You can go to sciencebob.com for the complete story and recipe, but you basically mix cornstarch and water in a  2:1 ratio.  (one cup or cornstarch to 1/2 cup of water)  Cornstarch is only $1.03 per box at Target.  You can even add food coloring to make it more fun.

Couple of tips:

  • Do it outside, it is a lot easier to clean up this way.  Totally non-toxic for the grass, bugs, people and pets.
  • DO NOT put it down your drain.  It can clog things up and make this a very un-frugal experiment.
  • Mix the food coloring in the water before you pour it in.
