Walmart's New Ad Matching Policy

Walmart announced a new ad matching policy via press release on Monday.  Apparently in the face of declining sales, the retailer has decided to match all competitor's prices, regardless of whether or not you have an ad from a competitor.  It appears that Walmart associates will have the competitor pricing information available to them, the customer will just have to ask for the lower price.

It seems possible, though, that this new policy may take a bit to filter down from the upper management think tanks to the front lines of customer service.  I think that I will continue to take the competitor's ad until everyone has been educated.  There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to complete a "deal" because of a policy issue.

Also of interest at Walmart, in an effort to bring customers back into the store, the retailer is adding 8,500 new items nationwide over the next few months.  The additions will start in grocery and continue through the clothing and electronic departments.  Both the new ad matching policies and increased variety are being highlighted in a national ad campaign, so you may see commercials featuring local Walmart employees and their stories.

Ironically this comes at a time when Meijer has announced that their store will discontinue their ad matching.  This policy is ceasing on May 1, 2011 according to cashiers.  FrugalFortWayne.com is planning to write the corporate office and express our dissatisfaction with this change.  Would you like to join us?  Follow the link to let your voice be heard.
