Important Property Tax Info for Allen County

There was an article in yesterday's Metro section of the Journal Gazette that is important if you are a property owner in Allen County.  Apparently there have been a large number of people claiming more than one homestead exemption, which amounts to a large (illegal) deduction of your property tax.
****Update:  I think I might have confused some people, you are NOT SUPPOSED to claim more than one homestead exemption.  The problem is that people are trying to do this and the verification forms/process is what the Auditor's office is doing to hopefully stop that.****  Sorry for any confusion.

The Allen County Auditor estimates that about 40% of residents have not filed their exemption verification paperwork.  This is required to keep your homestead exemption up to date.  The good news is that you can easily do it online by going to the Allen County Auditor's website.   Here you can check to see if you have filed your paperwork and subsequently file it if need be.

A note about this, when I searched our address, I didn't find anything.  However, we recently received our tax bill and when I search via the 'duplicate number' found on the bill, it came up right away.  We don't have our taxes escrowed, so I knew that it was my responsibility to take care of this.  I am not sure if you need to do it if your bank/mortgage pays your taxes.  It might be worth a call to the bank.

From what the article said, this is nearing your last chance to verify your exemption before your taxes will dramatically rise.  It really doesn't take more than five minutes to check.  Go do it, now!  :)

  2. Yes, this is not allowed, but some have been claiming the deduction on a second property. The verification process is an effort to stop that.
