Black Friday, Is It Worth It?

My dear sister, Kate, (co-blogger) sent me a link about an interesting pricing article revolving around Black Friday.  You can read it yourself here, or you can continue to read my very concise summary. :)

Basically, researchers have been tracking prices of various items from 2008 through 2011 to see if it's really worth it to battle the crowds on Black Friday.  According to the Wall Street Journal, it's not.  While some items may be less expensive, most have a better time frame that they could be purchased in.

Take Ugg boots for example, these winter season desirable brand items have a best purchase date between September and October, coming in at an average of about $85 for a pair of the "Classic Cardy" style.  During the Black Friday/Cyber Monday time frame, costs rose approximately 59% according to the Yahoo Finance article.

Some prices fall throughout the Christmas season and others actually rise, especially those in high demand.  Tickle Me Elmo, Furby, and Cabbage Patch Kids are examples that come to mind.  This has little to do with Black Friday, but if you get lucky and score one of these popular items, you will either be the best Santa on the block or make a bundle on eBay.

So, do you get up and go or do you stay in bed?  For some, as it was in my family, it can be as much about tradition and family time as it is about snagging a deal.  For many years, my mom and my sisters and I would trek out in the early cold to go to the sales.  I think my mom mainly wanted to get her shopping done and spend some time with us.  We enjoyed going, plus usually got lunch and were able to pick out what we wanted, as opposed to something not fitting on Christmas morning. We haven't gone in a few years, but I have really great memories of that tradition.

Enjoy yourself if you go, but now, according to this article, you are off the hook for feeling guilty if you don't go!
