If you picked up a bunch of strawberries at Meijer (they were 10 for $10, get the 11th free), you might be interested in this post. I am planning to stock up and fill the freezer. Here's how I do it:
Wash and rinse the berries
Next, cut off the stems
Let dry for a about 30 minutes |
Put into a freezer safe bag and place in freezer |
This is obviously not rocket science, but I have figured out that the drying part is very important. I didn't do this the first time and they all ended up stuck together in one giant strawberry ice cube. That was a frugal failure -- not my first, or my last. A couple of other notes:
Nothing is more aggravating than finding a good deal, only to discover that the store is out of the product. Fear not, Meijer will give a rain check, all you have to do is ask at the customer service desk OR, you can always take the add over to Walmart and they will ad match.
You can reuse the plastic bags that you put the berries are in. Once they become empty, I just shove them in the shelf of the freezer until they are needed again.
Some may argue this is not worth the time. I timed myself and minus drying time (because you can be doing other things) the whole process was less than 15 minutes. If you figure that frozen strawberries are regularly about $3 per pound, this is a 45% savings.
The more packages you do at a time, the more you can maximize your savings because of your efficiency.
We've taken to freezing grapes. They last a lot longer and make a great frozen snack!
